Bannister, Frederick

The funeral was held at Great Budworth Parish Church for the late Frederick Bannister of Comberbach who died on 18th August 2006 aged 86 years. Frederick known as Eric to his family and later as Fred to his friends was born at his grandfather's home; Nettlegate Farm in Aston-by-Budworth. Fred had a brother and two sisters. He loved his early life on the farm and enjoyed the horse and cart journey to market in Warrington with his grandfather and the walk across the fields to school at Great Budworth. When he was eight the family went to live in Comberbach he continued at Great Budworth School and joined the church choir. After leaving school at the age of 14 he went to work as an office boy in the general offices at I.C.I. Winnington. From office boy he was selected to be an apprentice electrician entitling him to further education at the Verdin Technical College in London Road Northwich. Fred was 20 at the start of the war and he was called up to the Army and joined REME; the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He served in various posts particularly in Plymouth of which he became very fond. In 1942 he married Betty Rayner but had to leave her in England as he was posted to Nigeria as Staff Sergeant. Remaining there until his demob at the end of the war when he returned to his job at I.C.I. The children Julie and Rob were born soon afterwards. Fred retired in 1984 enjoying many years with his family and friends. He was a lifelong member and supporter of Witton Albion Football Club and liked both watching the football and the social aspect of the club. Also a member of Comberbach Bowling Club Fred enjoyed meeting his friends there. He was always talking and liked to quote poetry especially that of W.B. Yeats and W. H. Davies. He was a cheerful and popular person who will be sadly missed by his wife Betty daughter Julia son Robert and their partners also his sister Joan. The service at Great Budworth Parish Church conducted by Rev Alec Brown was followed by interment in the churchyard. In addition to family floral tributes donations were received for Great Budworth Restoration Appeal.
