Broughton, William Derrick
The funeral was held on Tuesday 31st October for the late Derrick Broughton of Knutsford who died on 19th October 2006 aged 83 years. Derrick was born in 1923 at Bucklow Hill to parents Bill and Laura Broughton who were tenant farmers and moved from place to place around Cheshire Wilmslow was their final place before retirement. Derrick worked driving a coal lorry for L.A.C. he also worked at British Wax Wrappings based in Knutsford. Later he bought a news agency in Knutsford and for 38 years he delivered newspapers. Whilst also helping his elderly customers with jobs like lighting fires making breakfast and doing their shopping as he was a considerate man. When Iris his wife of 39 years to whom he was devoted passed away in 1986 he bore his grief very privately and with dignity. Derrick was an accomplished musician; as a youth he played the cornet in a band in Poynton and later played the accordion and appeared on stage in shows produced by his daughter Gloria who is a dancing teacher. He also had a tenor voice and enjoyed singing. He was a keen gardener and his garden a credit to his hard work and admired by all who saw it. A family friend affectionately known as "Bim" who had lived opposite him for 50 years looked after him during his illness and when thanked for her unconditional care remarked that he would have done the same. Derrick was a proud grandad and adored his grandsons Paul and Gary. He is survived by his daughter Gloria two grandsons and his brother Robert. The service and committal were held at Altrincham Crematorium conducted by Revd Michael Cavanagh. In addition to family floral tributes donations were received for the East Cheshire Palliative Care Fund. Arrangements by George Bell Funeral Service Northwich.
