The funeral service was held at Shurlach Methodist Chapel on Thursday 9th November 2006 for the late Sydney Bates of Rudheath who died on 2nd November aged 76 years. Mr Bates was born in Sandiway and was the youngest child of the late Joseph and Jane Bates. His two brothers and three sisters all predeceased him. He was brought up in Sandiway and attended the local school. He married Hilda Bates on 26th July 1952 at St Helen's Church Witton and they settled firstly in Weaverham before moving to Rudheath where they remained. Sydney completed his national service in the Royal Air Force. After serving his apprenticeship at Lewis Brothers he spent 29 years at Tesco as a motor mechanic. He enjoyed gardening bowls holidays and the company of his grandchildren in addition to being a Manchester City supporter. He is survived by his wife Hilda son Graham daughter-in-law Jeannette and grandchildren Emily-Rose and Freya Daisy. The service which was conducted by Revd Russell Rigby was followed by committal at Altrincham Crematorium. In addition to family flowers donations were received for The British Heart Foundation.
