Spann, Nellie

Nellie Spann The funeral has taken place of Nellie (Nell) Spann née Dunn who died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on the 5th Jan 2009 aged 77. Born at home in Jubilee St Northwich on 16th Sept 1931 and one of eight sisters and two brothers the Dunn family moved to Alderley Road Winnington from where Nell attended Winnington School until finishing her schooling at the age of 14, as was normal in the 1940’s. Nell started her working life at Boots the Chemist in Witton St as a Librarian in their lending Library and it was whilst employed there that she was to meet her future husband Bill when attending a dance at Winnington Rec in 1949. Marrying Bill at St Luke’s Winnington on 23rd Feb 1952 they set up home initially with Bill’s family before moving to their first home in Ash Road Sandiway from where she started work at Buckley’s paper shop Cuddington before moving on to Smith’s the Grocers serving the post war Polish community at Delamere Camp in the mobile shop. It was whilst living at Sandiway that Nell & Bill’s only son Steven was born on 1st July 1955. Moving to Granville Road Leftwich in 1957 Nell made home whilst carrying on working part time at Dennis Brown’s grocers, the Co-Op Davenham and Winsford Aerosols before moving to Dalefords Lane Whitegate in 1974. It was whilst living at Whitegate that Nell along with Bill formed their partnership WH&N Spann specialising in tarmacadam driveways and road surfacing, a partnership that endured for 29 years until Nell’s death 4 days before she was due to retire. An avid puzzle, crossword and soap opera fan Nell loved family life very much and took great delight in spending precious time with her grandchildren Paul & Emmeline. Nell is survived by her husband Bill, son Steven, grandchildren Paul & Emmeline, her sons partner Lynda & daughter-in-law Susie. The funeral service was held at St Mary’s Whitegate conducted by the Revd Lesley Eden followed by internment in the churchyard. Arrangements by George Bell Funeral Service, Northwich
