Lockwood, Frances Mary
Funeral report for the late Frances Mary Lockwood The funeral was held on Wednesday 25th June 2008 for the late Frances Mary Lockwood who died 15th June aged 91 years. Frances was born in January 1917 on a farm in the small village of Cadeby, 5 miles from Doncaster, and had a younger brother Clarence. She attended schools in Sprotborough and Doncaster. When they were not in school Frances and Clarence were expected to work hard on the farm, both drove tractors at an early age. When Frances was 17 she passed her driving test and loved running errands for her father. Frances continued to work on the farm throughout the war and in 1939 first met her future husband Tom, through his two sisters whom she had known at school. They married in 1945, a small family wedding due to war time conditions. After the war they settled in Doncaster where they ran a chemists shop, later moving to a slightly larger shop in Sale, Cheshire, where Frances was a housewife bringing up their 2 children Brian & Barbara. In 1966 they bought a shop in Princess Street, Knutsford where they remained until their retirement in 1981, when they sold the shop and moved to Goughs Lane. They both became very keen gardeners and joined the Tatton Garden Society. They made many new friends there and also in the Rex Club, where they both enjoyed the long group walks. Frances had been in the Inner Wheel for many years and after her retirement took her turn as president. She was also a keen member of the Tangent Club, a Ladies Luncheon Club and took up bridge with enthusiasm. She and Tom were lucky to have Toft Church only 10 mins away and worshipped there regularly. They also enjoyed looking after their 4 grandchildren. They had a happy and healthy retirement and in July 2005 celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Sadly Tom died shortly before Christmas 2005 which left Frances devastated. She reluctantly left Goughs Lane as the house and gardens where too much for her to manage on her own, and went to live in Parkhill Court. Frances is survived by her son Brian, daughter Barbara and grandchildren Alex, Christina, Ian & Andrew. The funeral service held at Toft Parish Church, conducted by Dr Thain Flowers, was followed by interment in the Churchyard. Flowers were received and donations for East Cheshire Crossroads. Arrangements by Dodgson’s Funeral Service, Knutsford.
