Francis, Derek

Funeral report for the late Derek Francis The funeral has taken place on 5th November 2008 for the late Derek Francis who died 23rd October aged 87 years. Derek was born in 1921 in Sale to Joseph and Florence Francis, the third child of four having two older brothers and a younger sister. Derek left school at 14 to work in an engineering factory. At the same time he began ten years of study at night school which was then Salford Technical College. For five nights a week after work he would take the bus to Salford to study until he had qualifications both in Mechanical & Chemical Engineering and finally a Chartered Engineer. He was awarded an Engineering Degree after Salford University was established. In the Second World War as an engineer, he was in a reserved occupation, but also served with the Auxiliary Fire Brigade during the Manchester Blitz. During the war he met and fell in love with Jean Clough and they married in 1947. They lived in Sale with their two children until the late 1960’s when they moved to Knutsford. They were both keen members of Ashton on Mersey and Knutsford Golf Clubs, Knutsford Rotary and Inner Wheel. They found great pleasure in their grandchildren and Derek had the additional delight also of his two little great granddaughters. He worked for Norman Engineering and later he became Managing Director of Nash Engineering, Great Britain. Derek had no intention of retiring and worked until Jean needed a greater level of care. Sadly Derek was widowed in 2003. Derek is survived by his daughter Jenny, son John, grandchildren Mark, Katie & Anna-Maeve and his great grandchildren Amelia & Sofia. The funeral service held at Toft Parish Church, conducted by Rev Dr Thain Flowers, assisted by Rev Nigel Atkinson was followed by interment in the churchyard. Family flowers and donations for Sight Savers were received. Arrangements by Dodgson’s Funeral Service, Knutsford.
