Denton, John (Jack)

Funeral report for the late Jack Denton Northwich Guardian The funeral was held on 10th July 2009 for the late John (Jack) Denton who died peacefully on 2nd July aged 79 years. Jack was born 25th September 1929 to Arthur and Alice Denton, of Navigation Road, Northwich. He grew up with his brother, Bob, with football and sport dominating his life long interests. He was educated at Castle Park Street Infants and Darwin Street Council Boys School. He began employment at Park Steelworks, Northwich aged 14, as an office clerk. Just days after reaching his 18th birthday he received his calling-up papers for National Service for the next 2 years. He signed up with the RAF at Padgate, Warrington and then received training at Hereford, Burtonwood, Handforth and Cliffe Pypard, Wiltshire before being sent to Valleta in Malta, Kasfareet, Suez Canal and later Trieste. He was demobbed at Kirkham on 12th December 1949. He returned to Parks Steelworks in January 1950 until November 1969. The following day he started work in the distribution department at Nalfloc Limited and continued to work there until March 1973. His final employed job was at ICI where he worked as a buyer until retirement in 1986. Jack married Enid Pemberton on 7th May 1955 at Witton Church. They had 2 children, Colin and Karen. Sport dominated Jacks interests and he played football for Yarwood’s FC aged 14, Barnton Juniors aged 16 and after National Service for Witton Albion [1950-55] as centre-half. During this period he also played half a season for Everton Reserves. He had signed amateur forms for Wolverhampton Wanderers but was blocked due to him receiving his embarkation papers. Playing tennis with friends introduced him to Enid who later became his wife. Now being a family man, he became player / secretary of the newly formed Hartford Football Club between 1959 and 1965. He moved on from Hartford in 1966 to become the manager of Moulton Football Club until 1968 and also managed the Davenham Cubs Football team within these years. As if football was not enough to keep him occupied in his spare time, he played Table Tennis between1960 and 1967 for several teams of which Broadhurst’s was one. The family was growing up by the early 1970’s and it was in 1974 that Jack was asked to help out with the increasing secretarial workload at the Northwich Amateur Swimming Club, a position he fulfilled until recently. He had been a swimming member at an early age. Aged 58, shortly after Jack had retired, he was awarded the Riddick Trophy - Vale Royal Sports Personality of the Year, which he received at Alvenley Cricket Club on 16th May 1988. He originated Swimming Club Tours to other parts of the UK and abroad in 1975 to Holland. He helped found the Mid Cheshire League and was Chairman of this and of the Deva League for many years. He also represented the club on the Deva League, Speedo League and North Midlands ASA. A heart attack early in 2005 curtailed the many hours per week Jack spent at poolside teaching and coaching children but until 3 months ago was very active in other aspects of the club - Vice Chairman, Swimming Secretary, Schools/Club Link Officer, Press Liaison, Disability Organisation Liaison, ASA Swimmer registration, Gala Official, Training of Officials, etc. In November 2008 he was received the Special Recognition Award, Borough Winner for Vale Royal Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership. Jack leaves his widow Enid, children Karen and Colin, daughter-in-law Joy, grandchildren Christopher, Peter, Jenny, Mandy, Hannah and his great-granddaughters Tiana and Jessica.
