Funeral report for the late Kathleen Elsie Walker (Steph) Knutsford Guardian The funeral was held on 23rd July 2009, for the late Kathleen Elsie Walker (Steph) née Wheaver, who died 16th July aged 94 years. Steph was born in Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire on 24th March 1915 to Alice & Arthur Barns Wheaver, during the I World War whilst her father was away fighting in France. She was the younger of two children having an older brother. She lived in the same area all her childhood and upon leaving school went to work in a department store in Birmingham. She was very proud of her modelling of wealthy ladies fashion. She married John Lewis Walker (Bill) on 8th October 1938 and moved to Kidderminster where their first child the late Tim was born. During the II World War Bill served with the RAF and the family moved to Much Wenlock, Shropshire where Steph’s two surviving children were born. In 1955 whilst living in Sale, Cheshire Steph took up Market Research. When Bill retired in 1970 they moved to Bingham, Notts then later to Knutsford in 1980. From there they moved to Minehead where they made new friends and started new hobbies, the Life Boat Institute being one. Sadly Steph was widowed during this time. She returned to Knutsford and became a founder member of the Barnardo’s Shop in the Square, working there well into her eighties. She always had a flair for selling. She helped with the Knutsford Tapestry in 2000 and enjoyed long walks in Tatton Park, keep fit and foreign holidays. She was also a member of the W.I. Steph is survived by her son Jon Walker, daughter and son-in-law Penelope & Rod Suckling, four grandsons, 4 great granddaughters and 2 great grandsons. Family and friends attended the funeral service at Altrincham Crematorium, conducted by Rev Brian Peace. Donations for the East Cheshire Hospice and Barnardo’s were greatfully received.
