Bannister, Jean

Funeral report for the late Jean Bannister Northwich Guardian The funeral service was held on 8th January 2010, for the late Jean Bannister who died 28th December 2009 aged 82 years. Jean was born in Manchester on March 26th 1927 in what is regarded as the roaring twenties but just prior to the Depression Years when Britain, nine years on, was still recovering from the repercussions of the First World War. At some point around the time of the Second World War Jean moved to Northwich. Here she met and married Bill, a boiler-maker but later a publican, firstly in Winsford and then later at The Roebuck in Northwich. I understand that it is one of the oldest pubs in Northwich not far from the Catholic Church of St Wilfrid’s and adjacent to the Bingo Hall. A good location and together she and Bill were amiable hosts for their patrons. You have to possess many qualities to be a publican: business acumen, knowledge of how well to keep your cellar and, above all else a sense of discipline and, of course, great social skills. Being able to engage with the rich variety of customer with their individual needs and foibles must be a reflection of many positive characteristics of both Jean and Bill as they served the public. I am sure that Peter will have many memories of those years. Sadly Bill took ill with MS and they had to leave the business. After several years of being dutifully nursed by Jean, Bill died and for a while Jean lived in Davenham and tried to make a life without her husband and companion. She enjoyed dancing, but her health declined and eventually she required full-time care and moved into Acorn Hollow Nursing Home. Jean is survived by her son & daughter-in-law Peter & Dawn. The funeral service and committal held at Walton Lea Crematorium were conducted by Mr Graham Sheen. Arrangements by George Bell Funeral Service, Northwich.
