The funeral was held on 4th June 2010, for the late Eric Hickson who died 28th May aged 85 years. Eric was born in Old Market Place, Knutsford to Annie & John Hickson, the elder of two children having a younger sister Phyllis. He was brought up in Knutsford and attended Egerton School. He married Irene on 10th January 1953 at St Cross Church, Knutsford, settling at first in Tatton Street then Manor Park North. As he was in a Reserved Occupation during the war he was in the Home Guard. He worked most of his working life for British Rail (44 years) at Northwich and Trafford Park becoming an Engine Driver on steam trains and later diesel. When he did the London trip it involved an overnight stay in a hostel. In latter years he was as Inspector and on his retirement from British Rail in 1985 he worked as a caretaker in Knutsford Schools. He also served as a magistrate on the Cheshire Bench. His interests included steam engines & tractors, helping at the Thousand Engine Show, gardening, history & general knowledge and sports. He was a great family man. Eric is survived by his wife Irene, son’s Alan & Derek, daughter-in-law Caroline, sister Phyllis and seven grandchildren. The funeral service held at St Cross Church, Knutsford, conducted by Rev Jayne Shepherd was followed by interment at Knutsford Cemetery.
