Tompsett, Peter

The funeral was held on 24th August for the late Peter Tompsett who died on 15th August 2010, aged 88 years. Peter was born in Mitcham, Surrey on 21st April 1922. He was the elder of three children born to James Reginald and Doris Rowena Tompsett, having two brothers, John and Lewis the youngest, who pre-deceased Peter. Peter grew up in Mitcham where he attended Mitcham County Grammar School. He later married his wife Eve in Manchester on 12th July 1948. They settled in Fallowfield, Manchester for 13 years, moving to Knutsford for the next 26 years, then for the last 23 years at Colwyn Bay. During the war Peter was a pilot, flying mainly Spitfire and Hurricane planes. A member of 66 Squadron at Perrenporth, he flew with bombers to destroy German ship at Brest. Posted to Asia, Ceylon, Singapore & Ardakan as bomber support, first in Hurricanes and later in Spitfires. Peter reached the rank of Flight Lieutenant, his Squadron 261 in the East. Peter was employed by Rollins & Sons (London) for over 50 years, starting as a salesman, then he became a Director and finally Managing Director; following his father’s footsteps who worked for the same company for more than 50 years. Peter Played rugby for Sedgeley Park, he also played cricket and tennis. In his later years he enjoyed playing bowls. Peter leaves his wife Eva; sons Martin & Geoffrey; daughters-in-law Carol & Chris; grandchildren Esther, Sophie & Liza; great grandchildren Amelia & Devon and brother John. The service and committal were held at Altrincham Crematorium, conducted by Dr Thain Flowers. In addition to family floral tributes, donations were received for the Salvation Army.
