Howden, Tom

Funeral report for the late Tom Howden The funeral was held recently for the late Tom Howden of Davenham, who died on 17th August 2010, aged 84 years. Tom was born in Birkenhead on 13th April 1926 to Mary & Frank Howden. He was the youngest of four children, having two sisters and his brother who passed away last year. Tom attended school in Barnston on the Wirral. After leaving school at the age of 14, he went to work as a trainee mechanic. In 1944, when he was 18, he joined the RAF and went to Canada to train as a pilot. After leaving the RAF, Tom joined the Fire Brigade at Birkenhead and became the only person to pass all his exams to become an Associate Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers. Later Tom went to work at Associated Octel in Ellesmere Port as a Fire Officer; he then transferred to the Northwich Branch as Fire and Security Officer. In 1952 he married Olive at Prenton Congregational Church in Birkenhead, their daughter Ann was born in 1955 and son Keith in 1958. Tom enjoyed spending holidays abroad with Olive, they also went caravanning and camping. His hobbies included D I Y and car maintenance; he enjoyed playing golf, gardening and photography. Tom mastered the use of a computer and was able to do his online shopping. He leaves his wife Olive, daughter Ann & son-in-law John, son Keith, four grandchildren Louise, Claire, Tim & Beth and two great grandchildren Leo & Matteo. The funeral and committal were held at Walton Lea Crematorium, conducted by Revd Martyn Cripps. In addition to family floral tributes, donations were received for St Luke’s (Cheshire Hospice).
