The funeral was held recently (6th February) for Roger Michael Sproston Stubbs of Middlewich who died on Monday 22nd January 2012, aged 67 years, at University Hospital of North Staffordshire. He was born at Adlington Hall, Cheshire to Phyl and Cyril (Sproston) Stubbs, who were well known business people in Northwich and had a long association with Cheshire Cricket. Roger had a sister Jane and the family lived in Beech Road, Hartford until 1987. He was the third generation of the family to own W J Sproston, the specialist tobacconist of High Street, Northwich, known countrywide. Roger eventually continued a successful career in Accountancy. Growing up in Hartford, he was educated at The Grange School, Hartford, then at Oswestry School, Shropshire. He enjoyed world travel when possible and had a second home in the Algarve, Portugal, where he hoped to settle. He was an active Condominium Chairman and belonged to a rambling group there. In his teens and early twenties, Roger was part of the Look Twice band. He was an enthusiastic Rally driver successful in the Beaujolais Rally, among others. He belonged to the Knutsford Car Club, was Captain of Northwich Cricket Club at Witton and a Manchester United Football Club ticker holder and share holder. Roger also generously sponsored Youth Cricket, lately at Adel, Yorkshire. He leaves a daughter Helen, son Nigel, granddaughter Isabelle, daughter-in-law Gemma, sister Jane and niece Suzanna (Suzy). Roger was married twice his first wife was Pamela and second wife Diane and he had a step-daughter Sarah. Far from being a passenger in life, Roger drove helping others along the way. He was respected, liked and loved. He was a special person and will be very much missed. The service was conducted by Revd Mike Smith at St Johnís Parish Church Hartford, followed by committal at Walton Lea Crematorium.
