The funeral has taken place of Alf Hickford of Northwich and formerly of Knutsford who died on August 15th aged 92 years. Alf was born in Heywood Lancashire on January 30th 1920, and was the eldest of two children, having a younger brother Derek. From the local Grammar School he went to work in the offices for Dunlop, and at the age of 20 years he met Barbara his surviving wife. It was to be a distance romance for the War had been declared, and Alf volunteered for the RAF, seeing service in the Middle East, Cyprus and Israel. On his return in 1945 he married Barbara. They settled back into Heywood and Alf went on to train as a teacher, and in time they had two daughters Pam and Angela. In turn they would have 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. After training he came to Cheshire and taught first in Darwin Street Northwich, then at Egerton School in Knutsford, Victoria Road in Northwich and finally at Church Walk Primary School where he was Head Teacher for 20 years until his retirement. Another aspect of his life that was important to him besides his family and teaching, was his faith and involvement with the church. When he lived in Knutsford Alf sang in the church choir at St. Johnís Knutsford, and after teaching in Northwich he went to St. Helenís Parish Church where he was Church Warden before eventually training and becoming a Reader which he did for a number of years. He was also a member of the Knutsford Rotary Club and became President in 1985 and also a member of the Plumley Probus Club. Alf will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. The service was held at St Helenís Church Northwich followed by committal at Altrincham Crematorium. Family floral tributes and donations for St Helenís Church were received.
