Funeral report for the late Douglas Charles Blackhurst The funeral was held on 15th April for the late Douglas Blackhurst of Knutsford who died on 10th April 2005 aged 82 years. Douglas was born in Barnton on 6th March 1923, on leaving school he began work as a cinema projectionist. After working for ICI he moved to London where he became a silk screen printer. He then worked in retail, being an excellent salesman, and worked at various places including Smithfield, Herbert Scales and John Lewis and Smith Brothers Department Store, where he became assistant general manager. He met Valerie at a party in London, they were engaged within six weeks and married six months later, enjoying 51 years of happy marriage. They had two daughters Denise and Julie with whom they spent many happy family holidays in Llandudno. In 1966 Douglas moved his family back to Cheshire, so he could look after his mother. He returned to work at ICI, leaving there to work at Wyles shoe shop in Northwich. Even after his retirement he job shared selling conservatories and later in a local shop. He was well known and well liked by many people due to his happy caring nature, he was fun loving and liked to tell stories. He supported Witton Albion and enjoyed socialising in the Polish or Catholic Club. He is survived by his wife Valerie, daughters Denise and Julie and four grandchildren. The service was held at Knutsford Methodist Church, prior to interment at Northwich Cemetery and was conducted by Rev Paul Wilson. Floral tributes were received from family and friends.
