The funeral was held on 21st March at Lostock Parish Church for the late Muriel Caldwell who died on 11th March 2005 aged 84 years. Muriel was born in Crewe, and had four brothers and three sisters, she later moved to Lostock. She served in the armed forces and also had the pleasure of working as housekeeper to George Formby (when Iím cleaning windows) who lived at Mere. Eventually Muriel decided to go and live in Australia and left in 1949. She was met there by Bill Caldwell, formerly of Mobberley and the son of a family friend. He looked after Muriel and helped her to settle in during her early days in Australia. They were married on 3rd December 1949 and lived in Australia for many years and had one daughter Joanna. Muriel worked for the Australian railways and Bill was an electrical engineer. On their return to England they opened a sweet and tobacconist shop in Rusholme, Manchester, eventually retiring to Northwich. After her husband passed away in 1987 Muriel decided to go and live with her daughter in Virginia Beach in the U.S.A. giving her the chance to be near her grandson Christopher, until she returned to England in 1990. In later years, with her health failing, Muriel lived in a nursing home at Davenham and then at Avandale Lodge. Muriel was an intelligent and articulate person who was very artistic, she had a passion for needlework and knitting, making some beautiful items. She also loved going to church and talking to the visiting ministers. Muriel will be greatly missed, but will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful and generous person.
