Holt, Edna Mary
The funeral was held at Chelford Parish Church on 15th July for the late Edna Mary Holt who died on 10th July 2005 aged 91 years. Edna was born in Manchester on 6th July 1914. She attended grammar school and secretarial college and spoke both French and Spanish, she became the personal assistant to the managing Director of Simon Engineering. She met her future husband, Reginald, at a cricket club dance when she was 19. They married on 31st August 1939 and lived in Wilmslow. After the war Reg renewed his passion for motorsport and Edna partnered him in many events, getting to know many of the famous race and rally drivers of the time. At the dinner dance following one Monte Carlo Rally, she danced with Prince Rainier. In 1957 Edna and Reg moved to Chelford, where she enjoyed the country life. Edna was an excellent cook, well known for her picnics in the hunting and point- to-point world. Although she had to be careful where she put her cakes and pies to cool, as it was not unknown for a horse to put its head through the kitchen window to eat them. Edna also loved gardening and spent many hours nurturing a peach tree which was grown from a stone. She was a member of the Wilmslow and Hale Flower Club and sat on the Lifeboat Committee. Edna was widowed in 1994, after being married for 55 years, and she found life very empty afterwards. In 1997 she moved to Prestbury, but never really settled there, sadly her daughter Jennifer died the same year. Edna decided to travel again and went on a number of cruises, accompanied by her daughter Sandra. Edna then moved to Mobberley, before spending her latter years at Tabley House, where she enjoyed the company and made new friends. She was a strong minded lady who enjoyed the finer things in life, whilst she valued courtesy, politeness and manners. Edna is survived by her daughter Sandra. The service at St John the Evangelist Church, Chelford was conducted by Rev Ian Sparks, prior to interment in the Churchyard.
