Harrison, Willie (Bill)

The funeral service was held at St Luke’s Church, Winnington for Mr Willie Harrison of Winnington who died on 28th August aged 95 years. Willie (Bill) was born in Church Road, Northwich in 1910. He was the second son of Willie and Maud (nee Barnes) Harrison. He and his elder brother, Arthur, attended Witton Boys' School. When Bill was 10 his father died. Some time later, his mother became ill so Bill went to live with his aunt and uncle on Manchester Road, Lostock. He was a member of Lostock Scouts. After leaving school, he worked in the cooperage at I.C.I. for a short time and then he became storekeeper in the Research Department, Winnington, where he stayed for 50 years. In his late teens he bought himself a banjo and went to Manchester for lessons, travelling there on his motorbike. Later, he and some other musicians formed a band and played for dances in Northwich Baths Hall and in the country villages. Bill courted his wife to be, Marion, and they married at St. Helen's Church, Northwich, in 1935, moving to their house in Winnington where he was to remain for nearly 70 years. He was a member of the I.C.I Fire Service until he was called up for active service in the RAOC in the Second World War. In fact, he would often give his children a fireman's lift up to bed! Bill was a keen gardener, growing all his own vegetables for many years. He also kept hens and ducks. Being an avid reader, he was a member of Brunner Library and also enjoyed playing bowls, a skill which he no doubt inherited from his father who was Champion Crown Green bowler of Cheshire. Bill and Marion enjoyed ballroom dancing which they managed to continue into their 80's. They also enjoyed coach holidays both in the UK and abroad and even visited Bahrain when their son John and his family were living there. After his wife, Marion, died in 1997 Bill carried on living at their home supported by his family. He continued to enjoy his gardening and having meals out with family for as long as he was able. He is survived by his children Maureen, Carol and John; also by his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to family flowers, donations were received for St Luke’s Church, Winnington. The service, which was conducted by Rev Sheila Hughes, was followed by interment at Northwich Cemetery. Arrangements by George Bell Funeral Service, Greenacre Funeral Home.
