The funeral service was held at St Luke’s Church, Winnington, for Mr Thomas Douglas Ian Johnstone of Winnington who died on 7th September aged 82 years. Mr Johnstone, known as Doug, was born in Surrey and had one older sister, Jean. He was brought up in Croydon. He married his late wife, Peggy, in 1947 at St Luke’s Church, and they settled in Winnington. He was widowed in 1993. He served in the Home Guard and in 1941 volunteered for the Royal Navy, serving in minesweepers. His ship was one of the first off Normandy Beachhead. In 1947 he began working for ICI in the Supply Department and he then became Service Controller in the Time Office. He retired in 1979 having received his Long Service Award. He and his late wife Peggy worked tirelessly for St Luke’s Church. He is survived by his daughter Diane, grandson Simon and sister Jean. In addition to family flowers, donations were received for St Luke’s Church. The service, which was conducted by Rev Sheila Hughes, was followed by committal at Altrincham Crematorium.
