Newall, Thomas

The funeral was held on 22nd December for the late Thomas Newall who died on 16th December 2005 aged 93 years. Thomas was born on 11th November 1912. He grew up in Knutsford and became a choirboy at Knutsford Parish Church. At the age of 14 he started work at Refuge Assurance, although he had “itchy feet” and wanted to go to Australia. He did athletics at Fallowfield, Manchester and he went hiking in Derbyshire every week-end. In 1932 he went on a protest march at Kinder Scout. He joined the Cheshire Yeomanry Territorial Army and reported for duty 2 days after the second world war was announced, being stationed at Warsop until he was sent to Palestine. Thomas married his wife Edna by special licence in 1944 and was away again until he was demobbed at the end of the war. He was a keen gardener, a member of the Knutsford and Crosstown Silver Prize Band. Thomas loved to travel to Wales and had climbed Snowdon. Thomas is survived by his sister, nephews and nieces. The service and committal were held at Altrincham Crematorium conducted by Canon N D Rogers. As well as family floral tributes, donations were received for Toft Road Surgery Equipment Fund.
