George was born in Manchester on 3rd November 1914. George and his wife Anne married in 1938. Soon afterwards George was serving his country in the 2nd World War, in the Royal Tank Regiment; was in many campaigns and received the Burma Star Medal. At Monte Cassino, Italy George was captured and remained a Prisoner of War, until reunited with his wife, Anne, in 1945. Settling back into civilian life, he worked for I.C.I. in Manchester. Later with Anne and their son Geoffrey he came with I.C. I. to Cheshire, ha also worked for Pickups, the butchers in Barnton. On moving to Knutsford in the 1950ís he worked for Sir James, of British Lancashire Steel Company and lived at High Moorland Lodge in Legh Road. George always loved a variety of sports and he and Anne will be fondly remembered as the resident stewards at Knutsford Golf Club, where they continued to work in the beautiful surroundings of the Golf Club, within the parameters of Tatton Park until George retired when he was in his late 60ís. But retiring did not mean taking life easy for George. He always loved to be active; remembered for being a kind, courteous man, always ready to help others. He lived in Townfields and latterly at Westfield Drive, Knutsford. Anne and George celebrated their 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary in 1998 and received telegrams of congratulations for Buckingham Palace and the House of Commons, from the, then, M. P. of Knutsford Martin Bell. As Anneís health began to falter, George devoted all his time to care for her until she died in September 2001. Quite soon after Anneís death Georgeís health started to fail; eventually needing 24 hour specialist care. During this time he moved to Winsford, near to his son Geoffrey, residing at The Laurels Residential Home. George is survived by his daughter-in-law Sue and grandchildren Julia, Graham and Louise.
